South Sound Chamber of Commerce Legislative Coalition
2023 Legislative Session Weekly Report – 1/13/23
The first week of the Legislative Session was super busy. Between the bill introductions, meeting new legislators, and just getting back into the swing of being in person, it feels like three weeks have gone by. But no, only one.
The biggest thing for SSCCLC this week were the introduction of, and some hearings, several housing bills. Also, with the release of the Governor’s transportation budget, we were concerned with delays of several projects, including the completion of SR 167, a major part of the Gateway project and a cornerstone of the SSCCLC transportation projects.
SSCCLC signed onto a business letter stating opposition to these delays and will be participating in several meetings and discussions about how to fully fund completion within the timeframes established. While we didn’t have time to get testimony organized during this first week, we will be testifying on subsequent hearings. In the meantime, we need all SSCCLC chambers to reach out to their legislators and urge them to bring these projects back onto the promised timelines.
In the Governor’s State of the State, he addressed more work on climate change, the need to build more housing and the need to help the homeless and people with mental health issues. If you haven’t seen the State of the State, you can watch it HERE. And HERE is the Republican Response.
See the hearings for week two below. SSCCLC will be weighing in on those with the most impact to our region.
