Dr. Derek Brandes passed away on April 10th after more than a year-long battle with cancer. He served as the Auburn Area Chamber Board Chair from July 2015 through June 2016, while working at Green River College as Vice President of Instruction. He participated in the Leadership Institute of South Puget Sound Class of 2014 and was elected Co-Class Speaker with Tom Shepard. After these roles, he became President at Walla Walla Community College in July 2016.

"Derek was an outstanding servant leader for the community, his profession and family. As a member of the Leadership Institute of South Puget Sound Class of 2014, he was recognized by his class as the Class Speaker, an honor he shared with classmate Tom Shepard. His Leadership Institute cohort saw Derek's willingness to serve others over his own interests. Those values carried over to everything he did." George Frasier - Vice President of College Advancement and College Relations, Green River College; Executive Director, Green River College Foundation; Faculty Leader, Leadership Institute of South Puget Sound.

"Derek's commitment to students and his community was reflected in his work as a member of the Chamber serving on the Education Committee. He was a caring and loving husband and father, a diehard sports' fan, and a passionate leader. His commitment to student success and his generous care of others was shown through his daily involvement on campus and within the Auburn community." Dr. Deb Casey - Vice President of Student Affairs, Green River College; Executive Board, Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Derek's family, friends and colleagues.
